iPods and iPhones have almost become a way of life for many people. And one of our most common requests is integration into a vehicle. We have been installing these interfaces for people in Westminster, Baltimore, and all around Maryland into southern Pennsylvania since they came out in 2001. WSS Westminster Speed and Sound’s installs number into the thousands now. Our employees are experts in the field of integration. Let’s look at four different ways we can get your device to work in your vehicle.

The most common request we get is a person wanting to integrate with their factory installed stereo system. On many vehicles we have the capability to give you complete control of your iPod or iPhone using interfaces from such manufacturers as USA Spec and PAC Audio. This means our devices allow you to search by artist, album, song, playlist, etc. They will also charge the device while it is connected. We typically install a connector that docks on the bottom of the unit in the digital port so you do not need to adjust volume on the unit or hold it in your hand while driving. Everything is done by the controls on your factory installed stereo system.

On certain vehicles that are older or have very simple factory stereo systems a good option is to replace the in-dash CD Player with a new unit that has controls for your device. Now you also open a complete laundry list of options such as Bluetooth hands-free for your iPhone or other cell phone. You can also add satellite radio, a navigation system, a touchscreen display, backup cameras, and the list goes on and on. These are typically the best sounding units as they use very high quality DAC’s or digital to analog convertors to take the information on your device and turn it back into music. We can gladly go over all of your options with you.

A third option is installing an external controller for your device. These devices also give you Bluetooth hands-free. The main difference between this device and the first option we talked about is that you have a remote mounted controller for all of your functions and display. The sound still goes through your original installed stereo system but the operation is not done by original unit in your dash. This type of product is also very popular and sounds very good.

The fourth option is using an FM Modulator. They come in two types; wired and wireless. We do NOT sell the wireless type as we have found the sound quality of these units to be completely unacceptable. On the other hand, the wired units sound pretty good. If you have a vehicle where an integration device descibed in option #1 is not available and it is not feasible for you to replace your original stereo, this is the option for you. Here is how it works; we install a device that goes inline with your FM antenna. Right before it plugs into your FM tuner we insert this device in the signal path. Whenever you play your device this interface will completely disconnect any outside FM signal from getting inside your tuner and we replace that signal with the audio from your device. We can also can install a cable that will charge your device while it is in the vehicle.
